Financial aid for nursing school is primarily made up of grants, loans, and scholarships. Most students will need assistance from each category of financial aid in order to fund their education. Nursing school grants are the best category of financial aid as they do not need to be repaid.
A grant is a financial aid tool like a loan or scholarship. Some grants may come with certain terms and conditions attached upfront, similar to what scholarships require of their applicants. Possible terms for nursing school grants include:
- Being a child of a union employee
- Being enrolled in a certain specialty
- Living in a particular area
- A student having a certain grade point average
- Working on specific research projects while enrolled
Unlike a student loan, grants do not need to be repaid after they have been awarded. Scholarships may require that students maintain a certain grade point average throughout the semester to remain eligible. Once a student is awarded a grant, they are generally free to spend the money as they see fit. If a grant does have a condition about what it must be spent on, typically it is a general expense such as books or tuition.
However there are considerably fewer grants than there are loans and scholarships. This makes the competition for them even more intense. Grants typically have stricter rules about reapplying and receiving a grant in more than one school year. Federal student grants are awarded primarily on financial need, the ability to pay for college, and other metrics. Federal grants will not be awarded to students if they have the ability to pay for their tuition.

All federal financial aid is determined by the data collected by a student’s FAFSA. It is entirely free, but it must be resubmitted on a yearly basis. Nearly all colleges and universities also use the FAFSA’s data to determine whether they will offer a student any of their grants.
Although nursing school grants generally cannot help a student attend a program on their own, they are a key part of an overall financial aid package. Grants can be difficult to find, but they come with no repayment necessary. For students struggling financially, a grant can be a better form of financial aid than loans and scholarships if it is available to them.
